Windows 10 Ending: Upgrading to Windows 11

Windows 10 Ending: Upgrading to Windows 11

From Windows 10 to 11: A technology hurdle

Upgrading to Windows 11: Embrace the Change

As technology advances, it is essential to keep our systems current for security, compatibility, and performance. A&S IT is excited to announce that upgrading to Windows 11 from Windows 10 is now available as an in-place upgrade (IPU) for compatible managed computers.

While the IPU option has been available and voluntary since Fall 2024, it will become mandatory for managed devices on March 17, 2025.

How to know if your computer is in scope for this change:

  • If you login to your computer using WUSTL Key, you are likely on a managed Windows computer.
  • If your Windows icon is on the lower left of your primary screen, you are likely on Windows 10. Windows 11 moves this more towards the middle of your task bar.

What to expect when upgrading in place:

  • Windows 11 will download in the background and apply itself as a larger but routine patch on compatible systems on your next restart after the mandatory date.
  • You may use Self-Service to launch the upgrade earlier if the chosen timing is not ideal or work with your A&S IT Support Representative to assist.
  • Your computer may restart a couple times - this may take longer on older or lower spec computers, but generally takes 30-90 minutes.
  • Your files and applications will remain intact.
  • Upon completion, you may login and continue to use without further IT interaction.

System Compatibility

Generally, computers from 2018 or newer are compatible with Windows 11. Older devices may not meet the requirements, and you may need to consider hardware upgrades or replacements if retirement of the device is not an option.

Windows 11 Improvements and Features:

  • Enhanced User Interface
  • Improved Performance
  • Advanced Security
  • Seamless Integration
  • Software Compatibility

Why is this required? Because Windows 10 is at End-of-life

Windows 10 will reach its end of life in October 2025; no longer receiving security or compatibility updates from Microsoft. As such, it will become more vulnerable to problems over time. Upgrading to Windows 11 ensures ongoing support and security beyond this date.

What if my computer is not managed or I need other help?

For unmanaged devices, you are encouraged to work with your A&S IT Support Representative on manual in-place upgrades, replacements, or other plans suited to your unique needs.

Support and Extensions

Extensions to the mandatory upgrade can be requested but will require additional effort and may incur both financial and time costs to pay for extended support, manually implement workarounds, and fill out security exception forms. Our IT team is available to provide support, including potential device swap replacements or temporary extensions, to help you transition away from Windows 10 devices before end of life.

Why is this mandatory in March instead of another time?

This seemed the best timeline given the scheduling challenges and resources available.

While many devices have moved already, A&S has hundreds of computers remaining. We needed a timeline that allowed the best chance to complete by October and felt that Summer availability and Fall semester start challenges would make this more negatively impactful than by going earlier when we have the most time and support options internally and with our WashU IT partners who are assisting with all Schools at WashU.

We encourage everyone using Windows 10 to upgrade to Windows 11 at their earliest convenience to ensure a smooth transition and remain at the forefront of technology. Don't wait—upgrade today to ensure a secure and efficient computing environment.
